Meeting Standby Energy Requirements in Motor Drive Applications
The energy or power consumed by an electrical device or appliance while in an off or unused state, also known as standby energy or power, is the target of new efficiency regulations. Different solutions have been proposed to limit the standby energy being drawn by devices when not in use, including the use of mechanical or solid-state relays. This paper proposes a method for reducing standby energy consumption in motor drive applications to meet the standby energy requirements with minimal parts.

Multi-Output Flyback Converter for Metering Applications that Protects Against Magnetic Interference
A design method for reducing the susceptibility of a multi-output flyback to externally applied magnetic interference is discussed. Appropriate transformer design, component selection, and leveraging the benefits of ON/OFF control help achieve this.
Results show start-up and thermal performance. Efficiency data and waveforms with and without the imposition of strong external magnetic disturbances are compared. This is intended for metering applications.

Achieving High Efficiency Across Load in a 2-Stage 140 W Flyback USB PD 3.1 Compact Notebook Adapter
Flyback converters are widely used for their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. However, when output power exceeds 100 W, meeting regulatory efficiency requirements for light to full load can be difficult. The primary sources of efficiency losses are switching losses in the primary power switch and conduction losses, particularly due to hard switching. This paper explores methods to reduce switching and conduction losses through component selection and how transformer leakage inductance.

Optimizing Efficiency and Output Regulation for Dual-Output Flyback Converters with 1700V GaN Switch
For industrial applications requiring high-input voltages, Silicon Carbide (SiC) switches have traditionally been the go-to choice, especially for voltages up to 1000 V. However, the new high-voltage GaN technology offers possibilities for higher efficiency and reduced system cost. This paper focuses on optimizing efficiency and output regulation for a 60 W single-stage flyback power supply featuring dual outputs that offer better than ±1% regulation across a wide input voltage range of 300 VDC.

Transient Response for Sensorless Field-Oriented Control Using Integrated Current Sensing
Sensorless Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors requires current information. Integrated current sensing is used to improve current information and reduce component count. An additional current reconstruction algorithm is required to calculate the missing current information with this approach. This paper analyzes the transient response of using integrated current sensing for sensorless FOC to verify its feasibility for high torque-transient applications.

Single-Phase BLDC Motors for External Fan Applications
This paper explores the feasibility of utilizing the single- phase BLDC motor for external fan applications, especially the handling of external wind conditions and mitigating the increased torque ripple inherent in single-phase motors.
A method to support different startup conditions that provides improved alignment is described. Compensation for increased torque ripple is addressed by the proposed hall-based imbalance handling algorithm.

Control Methods I
15:30 - 17:00
This paper describes an enhanced Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control technique that delivers very high efficiency across a wide range of input line and load conditions. This addresses an emerging industry requirement for reducing consumption in standby–achieving high efficiency below 1 W input. Additional features improve transient response and avoid the problems caused by the bandwidth limitation encountered when using conventional optocouplers in the feedback loop.

Modeling Frequency Response of a Novel Pulse Width Modulated Flyback Control Scheme
This paper describes the controller design, modeling, and verification of a flyback power supply based on an enhanced Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) control technique capable of excellent output voltage regulation, transient response, and high efficiency. The controller is composed of an off-time and peak current modulator, which changes the converter’s switching frequency as a function of output load, resulting in excellent performance across a wide range of input line and output load conditions.
